The precise cause of this disease is unknown. The disease is hereditary. Other family members may thus also be affected.
In your case, certain fats are being deposited in many of your body’s cells. As a result, the cells are severely damaged and dying. Your nervous system and eyes in particular are affected by this. The nervous system includes all the nerves in the body, as well as the brain and the spinal cord. The nerves run from the brain and spinal cord into the body. They convey information in the body.
If you have this disease, you can get severely ill and may have already symptoms as a child. At the start of the disease, your vision gets worse and worse, and later you go blind. Your mental faculties may also be impaired and you might behave differently than normal. It is also possible that you will not be able to control your movements properly or that you will have seizures.
