Z99: Dependence on enabling machines and devices, not elsewhere classified
Z99.1: Dependence on respirator
You can no longer breathe properly on your own. This can happen when the lungs are severely damaged, for example. Your breathing is thus carried out or assisted by a respirator. Thanks to the artificial respiration, the blood in the lungs is enriched with oxygen and carbon dioxide removed.
There are various forms of artificial respiration. For example, you can receive artificial respiration via a mask on your face or directly through your windpipe. The lungs are on the left and right side of the ribcage. They are also connected to the nose and mouth via the bronchial tubes and windpipe (trachea).
