Z01.1: Examination of ears and hearing
The ear is a sensory organ that is used to hear and to maintain one's balance. There are 3 different areas in the ear: the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.
An ear examination is done to assess the ears from outside and inside. It's possible to look through the auricular canal as far as the eardrum, which forms the boundary with the middle ear.
A hearing test may also form part of an ear examination. This tests how good one's hearing is, as a whole or in particular areas. For example, it tests whether someone can hear lower-pitched sounds better than high-pitched sounds.
