Y91: Evidence of alcohol involvement determined by level of intoxication
Y91.3: Very severe alcohol intoxication
Very severe alcohol intoxication, also known as alcohol poisoning, occurs when a large amount of alcohol is consumed in a short period of time. It is a critical and potentially life-threatening condition. The high level of alcohol overwhelms the body's ability to break it down and process it, leading to serious disruptions in physical and mental functions. Common signs include confusion, vomiting, slow or irregular breathing, hypothermia or low body temperature, bluish or pale skin color, seizures, and unconsciousness. In severe cases, it can disrupt the functioning of the gag reflex and lead to choking, or obstruct breathing and heart rhythms leading to death. The condition affects the entire body but primarily targets the central nervous system. The progression of symptoms can be quick and unpredictable hence immediate medical attention is required. This usually involves stabilization, detoxification and long-term support for recovery.
