Y58: Bacterial vaccines

Y58.6: Pertussis vaccine, including combinations with a pertussis component

Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious bacterial disease caused by Bordetella pertussis. This infection can cause serious complications, particularly in infants and young children. It presents with symptoms that resemble a common cold at first, such as runny nose, low-grade fever, and a mild cough. However, as the disease progresses, patients typically develop severe, often violent and rapid coughing fits, followed by a high-pitched "whoop" sound during the next breath of air, hence its nickname. The pertussis vaccine, included in various combinations with other vaccines, is a vital preventive measure against this disease. Adverse reactions to the pertussis vaccine itself are considered rare, but can exist, and may manifest through symptoms like fever, body aches, or allergic reactions.
