Y52: Agents primarily affecting the cardiovascular system

Y52.7: Peripheral vasodilators

Peripheral vasodilators are medications that help blood vessels, particularly the arteries, dilate or expand. This type of drug works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the walls of the blood vessels, allowing them to widen and increase the flow of blood. As a result, peripheral vasodilators can alleviate symptoms caused by restricted blood flow, such as chest pain or claudication (cramping pain in the leg caused by inadequate blood supply). They can also help lower blood pressure. Adverse reactions can include a sensation of warmth or flushing, headache, rapid heartbeat, and dizziness, as a result of a sudden drop in blood pressure. It's important to note that not all people will experience these side effects, and some may experience none. Usage of these drugs is usually monitored by a healthcare professional.
