X85-Y09: Assault

X91: Assault by hanging, strangulation and suffocation

Assault by hanging, strangulation, and suffocation refers to a group of life-threatening situations where a person's regular breathing or blood flow to the brain is intentionally obstructed by another individual. Typically, such situations occur due to acts of violence or intentional harm. Hanging involves a ligature around the neck causing an interruption in the flow of oxygen. Strangulation and suffocation also result from similar occlusion to the airway, either by external pressure on the neck or by blocking the flow of air into the lungs. These conditions are extremely serious and can cause immediate harm, including loss of consciousness, brain damage, and potentially death. Symptoms such as difficulty breathing, changes in skin color, swollen or protruding tongue, facial petechiae (tiny bursts blood vessels), and incontinence may occur. Their progression is rapid, as a lack of oxygen significantly impacts the body's vital systems, especially the brain and heart.
