X88.3: Assault by carbon monoxide from other sources

Assault by carbon monoxide from other sources, coded as X88.3 in the ICD-10 WHO 2016 classification, typically refers to the harmful exposure of carbon monoxide (CO) gas from sources other than fire. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas, which can cause severe health conditions if inhaled in excess. This condition occurs when a person is deliberately exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide, often in an act of harm done by another person. Upon exposure, carbon monoxide enters the bloodstream and replaces the oxygen in red blood cells, leading to a significant decrease in the amount of oxygen reaching the body's tissues and organs. Symptoms of this condition may include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, confusion and it can lead to a loss of consciousness, and in severe cases, it can be fatal.
