X88: Assault by gases and vapours
X88.2: Assault by carbon monoxide from other domestic fuels
Assault by carbon monoxide from other domestic fuels, also denoted by the ICD-10 code X88.2, is a medical condition triggered by the intentional inhalation of carbon monoxide often associated with domestic fuels, for instance, gas or coal. The poisonous gas, which is produced when such fuels do not completely burn, have a high binding affinity for hemoglobin in the blood, and therefore replaces oxygen in red blood cells, causing severe health complications. Symptoms often include headaches, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. Continued exposure can eventually lead to loss of consciousness and even death. Most people are unaware of their exposure and its subsequent effects as carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless. The occurrence of this condition can cause potential harm to multiple bodily systems, principally the cardiovascular and nervous systems.
