X60-X84: Intentional self-harm
X71: Intentional self-harm by drowning and submersion
Intentional self-harm by drowning and submersion is a serious form of self-harm where an individual deliberately tries to induce a state of lack of oxygen due to immersion in water or other liquid. This condition is usually a result of psychological distress or mental health issues such as depression or anxiety. It demonstrates the most severe form of suicidal ideation and the intent to end one's life through drowning. The most obvious symptoms are not from the act itself but preceding behavioural changes such as withdrawal, mood swings, and verbalizing thoughts of suicide. Upon surviving such an event, complications may arise as a consequence of oxygen deprivation, affecting the cardiovascular and neurological systems, potentially leading to irreversible brain damage, heart issues or even death.
