X20-X29: Contact with venomous animals and plants
X27: Contact with other specified venomous animals
The ICD-10 X27 group of conditions, known as contact with other specified venomous animals, encompasses medical conditions resulting from direct interactions with various venomous animals. The instigating factor is usually a venomous bite or sting, from creatures that aren't traditionally classified within the standard range of venomous snakes, insects, or marine animals. Depending upon the specific venomous creature involved, symptoms can vastly differ and can range from localized reactions like skin redness, swelling, and pain to more severe responses such as breathing difficulties, low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, and in extreme cases, shock. Progression of these conditions depends on the severity of the venom's effect and can impact the skin, circulatory, respiratory, and nervous systems. The transmission of these conditions always requires direct contact with the source animal. Importantly, both the response to and severity of venom impact can vary greatly from person to person.
