W75-W84: Other accidental threats to breathing
W78: Inhalation of gastric contents
Inhalation of gastric contents, also known as aspiration, is a group of conditions where stomach content particles are accidentally inhaled into the respiratory system. This usually happens when the body's protective reflexes are compromised, such as during sedation, anesthesia, or due to certain medical conditions. Major symptoms include sudden bouts of coughing, difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest pain or discomfort, and fever in some cases. These symptoms may develop rapidly or take time, depending upon the individual's health and the type and quantity of aspirated material. The inhaled gastric contents can cause infection, inflammation, or blockage in the lungs leading to serious health complications, like pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome. The digestive and respiratory systems are most affected by this group of conditions.
