V90-V94: Water transport accidents

V92: Water-transport-related drowning and submersion without accident to watercraft

Water-transport-related drowning and submersion without accident to watercraft describes incidents where a person is submerged or immersed in water, resulting in the inability to breathe, and excluding any incidents or accidents involving a watercraft. The primary cause of this condition, as the name suggests, typically involves water-based activities such as swimming, snorkeling, diving, or being unexpectedly swept by waves. Symptoms often commence with a sensation of panic, followed by difficulty in breathing, loss of consciousness, and ultimately, if aid is not immediately given, cardio-respiratory arrest. Progression can be rapid, leading to serious complications such as brain damage due to oxygen deprivation, or even death. This condition can affect the respiratory and circulatory systems most severely, among others. The risk increases in bodies of water with strong currents, high waves, or poor visibility, as well as among inexperienced swimmers or those lacking adequate supervision.
