U84.7: Resistance to multiple antimicrobial drugs

Resistance to multiple antimicrobial drugs, also known as multidrug resistance (MDR), is a condition where harmful bacteria in the body become resistant to the action of several drugs designed to kill them. This can occur when bacteria mutate or change in response to the use of these drugs. MDR can make many infections harder to treat, because common antibiotics are often ineffective against the resistant bacteria. Infections due to resistant bacteria can occur anywhere in the body, with symptoms depending on the location of the infection. As the disease progresses, infections may fail to respond to usual treatments and may persist or worsen, possibly affecting multiple body systems. It's important to note that MDR does not mean the patient is resistant to drugs, but rather the bacteria causing the infection are resistant.
