T67: Effects of heat and light
T67.0: Heatstroke and sunstroke
Sunlight falling directly onto the head and neck can cause health problems. This is also known as sunstroke. Severe or lengthy exposure to the sun can irritate the brain and the meninges. The brain is located in the head and it is surrounded externally by 3 thin membranes. These membranes are called meninges. If the brain or meninges are irritated, you can suffer headaches and nausea. You can also get neck pain and fever.
Health problems can also occur because of extreme heat. They can particularly occur in association with physical effort. With physical effort or extreme heat, the body’s temperature increases. If the environment is very hot, insufficient heat can be released from the body to the environment. You can get a high fever. Your skin can be dry, red and hot. You can get circulatory problems. You can pass out or have seizures. In that case, you may be seriously ill.
