T51-T65: Toxic effects of substances chiefly nonmedicinal as to source

T55: Toxic effect of soaps and detergents

Soaps and detergents are used for washing and cleaning. They reduce the surface tension of water and have a fat-dissolving effect.

Poisoning with soaps or detergents is possible through ingestion, for example. The soaps or detergents can damage the mucous membranes in the digestive organs and form foam. This can lead to abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. If the foam is inhaled while vomiting, for example, lung damage is also possible.
