T41.5: Poisoning: Therapeutic gases

Various gases can be used to treat certain illnesses or in operations. Such gases include oxygen and carbon dioxide, for example.

A gas can cause poisoning if, for example, too much of it is inhaled. The gas may also have been inhaled or administered by mistake.

Poisoning by a gas can cause headaches, for example. You may also feel dizzy. You may have breathing difficulties. Your heart may beat more quickly. You may feel sleepy or lose consciousness.
