T22: Burn and corrosion of shoulder and upper limb, except wrist and hand

T22.5: Corrosion of first degree of shoulder and upper limb, except wrist and hand

Corrosion of first degree of shoulder and upper limb, excluding wrist and hand, refers to a specific type of skin injury. This condition is typically caused by an external damage to the skin due to corrosive substances like strong acids or alkalis. When these substances come into contact with the skin on the shoulder, upper arm, or elbow they trigger a chemical reaction leading to tissue damage. This injury classifies as first-degree because it affects the first layer of the skin - the epidermis. The common symptoms may include reddening, pain and mild swelling on the affected area. Deeper skin layers are not affected in a first-degree corrosion. The affected person may also experience discomfort when the skin is touched, similarly to a sunburn. Despite being painful, these are often minor injuries, with recovery generally occurring as the fruit of the skin's natural regenerative processes. However, it's crucial to clean the affected area thoroughly to prevent infections.
