T21: Burn and corrosion of trunk
T21.7: Corrosion of third degree of trunk
Corrosion of third degree of the trunk is a serious medical condition characterized by a severe type of skin injury predominantly involving the torso. This injury occurs when a corrosive substance, such as a strong acid or base, comes in direct contact with the skin. The severity is such that it extends deeper than just the outer layer of skin, affecting both the epidermis and deeper tissues like the dermis and possibly even the underlying muscles and bones. It presents with symptoms like noticeable discoloration of the skin which can range from white and waxy to a dark brown or black. Accompanying these are intense pain and the development of open wounds, or ulcers. Alongside the skin injuries, there may be secondary complications that include shock due to severe pain or fluid loss, infection, scarring, and functional impairment depending on the area affected on the trunk.
