S83: Dislocation, sprain and strain of joints and ligaments of knee

S83.1: Dislocation of knee

Dislocation of the knee is a severe injury that occurs when the bones within the knee joint are forcefully moved out of their normal positions. This can happen as a result of a traumatic injury such as a fall, automobile accident, sports injury, or even a significant twist. The knee joint, which is comprised of the femur (thigh bone), tibia (shin bone), and patella (kneecap), is surrounded by a network of connective tissues and ligaments that hold the bones in place. When these structures are damaged or overstretched, they're unable to maintain the correct alignment of the knee, resulting in dislocation. Symptoms usually include intense pain, swelling, inability to move the knee, visible deformity, and sometimes loss of circulation or sensation below the knee. This condition typically requires immediate medical attention to minimize damage and ensure proper healing.
