S82: Fracture of lower leg, including ankle
S82.3: Fracture of lower end of tibia
A fracture of the lower end of the tibia is a medical condition characterized by a break or crack in the lower section of the tibia, one of the two bones in your lower leg. The tibia, or shinbone, is the weight-bearing bone in the leg, therefore fractures to this bone can greatly affect your ability to walk or stand. Such fractures can occur as the result of strong direct impact, such as in a collision or fall. Symptoms often include severe leg pain that increases with movement, visible deformity if the fracture is severe, swelling, and bruising. In some cases, there may also be an open wound if the bone has punctured through the skin. Without intervention, a tibia fracture may lead to further complications such as infection, nerve damage, or improper healing.
