S72: Fracture of femur

S72.1: Pertrochanteric fracture

A pertrochanteric fracture, classified under ICD-10 code S72.1, is a specific type of hip fracture. This medical condition occurs in the area of the hip just below the ball-and-socket joint, where your thigh bone, or femur, takes a sharp turn. This part of the femur, called the pertrochanteric region, is susceptible to fractures, especially among older adults with weaker bones due to osteoporosis. A pertrochanteric fracture typically happens as a result of a fall, direct blow, or sometimes even from a simple movement if the bones are significantly weakened. Common symptoms include severe pain in the hip or groin area, inability to move or put weight on the affected leg, and the leg appearing shorter or turned outwards compared to the other one. This condition presents itself acutely, with sudden onset of symptoms, and immediate medical intervention is usually required.
