S42: Fracture of shoulder and upper arm

S42.1: Fracture of scapula

A fracture of the scapula refers to a break in the scapula, also known as the shoulder blade. This is a bone that connects your clavicle (or collarbone) with your humerus (or upper arm bone), forming the shoulder joint. Scapular fractures are relatively uncommon and usually happen as a result of a forceful impact, such as a high-speed automobile accident, a fall from a significant height, or a violent blow to the shoulder. The common symptoms include severe pain, swelling, bruising in your upper back or shoulder, and difficulty moving your arm. Diagnosis is commonly made through a physical examination and imaging tests such as X-rays or CT scans. Untreated scapular fractures could lead to prolonged pain, shoulder instability, and decreased shoulder function. Therefore, it's crucial for diagnosis and treatment to occur promptly after an injury.
