S42.0: Fracture of clavicle

A fracture of the clavicle, also known as a broken collarbone, is an injury that involves a break in the collarbone, which is the bone that runs horizontally between the shoulder and the base of the neck. This condition frequently occurs as a result of direct trauma to the shoulder, often caused by sports injuries, car accidents, or falls. Symptoms typically include intense pain in the collarbone area, difficulty moving the arm on the affected side, swelling, bruising, and a noticeable bump over the break. The arm on the injured side may also appear shorter or be positioned in an unusual manner. Occasionally, the broken bone can pierce the skin, leading to an open fracture. The fracture disrupts the normal functioning of the shoulder and can result in reduced mobility. The progression of the condition depends largely on the nature and severity of the injury.
