S36: Injury of intra-abdominal organs
S36.0: Injury of spleen
Injury of the spleen refers to any trauma or damage affecting the spleen, an organ located under your rib cage on the left side of your abdomen. This organ plays a significant role in your body's immune system, producing and maintaining healthy blood cells, and filtering blood. Common causes of splenic injuries include blunt trauma from accidents (such as car collisions), falls, sports injuries, or abdominal assaults. An injured spleen often leads to abdominal pain, often severe, on the left side that may radiate to the left shoulder. There could also be signs of shock from internal bleeding such as light-headedness, confusion, blurry vision, and loss of consciousness. The condition is a medical emergency as it can cause life-threatening internal bleeding.
