S26: Injury of heart

S26.0: Injury of heart with haemopericardium

The heart pumps blood through the body. Inside the heart are 4 chambers. There are 2 heart atria and 2 ventricles. Both heart atria and both ventricles are separated from each other by a partition. The pericardium is a layer of connective tissue surrounding the heart. There is some fluid in the pericardium (heart sac). So the heart is able to move inside this lining.

The heart gets injured, for example, as a result of an accident or a violent blow to the chest.

As a result of the injury, blood has flowed into your heart sac and accumulated there.

When the heart has been damaged, it may sometimes no longer be able to pump blood through the body so well. The person may then lose consciousness. The heart might have an irregular beat for a while after an injury.
