S06.7: Intracranial injury with prolonged coma

Intracranial injury with prolonged coma, refers to a serious brain injury that results in the person being in a state of unconsciousness for an extended period of time. This injury, typically caused by trauma to the head from an accident, fall, violence, or other sudden event, affects the brain's normal functioning. People with this condition appear to be in a deep sleep or unresponsive to their environment and cannot be roused even with strong stimulation. They may exhibit few or no signs of being aware. Moreover, symptoms like absent response to pain, absence of sleep and wake cycles, and unresponsiveness to stimuli may be observed. This condition can be life-threatening, requiring immediate medical attention to support critical bodily functions and potentially minimize any long-term effects. Progression and prognosis of this condition largely depend on the severity and area of brain damage.
