R95-R99: Ill-defined and unknown causes of mortality

R98: Unattended death

Unattended death refers to a situation where a person dies alone and there are considerable delays before the death is discovered. This might occur in scenarios such as individuals living alone with little social contact or those in secluded locations. It's not a disease or illness, but a circumstance of death. There aren't specific symptoms, as the underlying causes of death can span a wide range of medical conditions, from chronic diseases such as heart disease or cancer, to sudden events like stroke or accident. Unattended death doesn't reflect the cause or pathological process leading to death, but rather the social circumstances around the death. The delay in discovery can complicate postmortem investigations due to changes that naturally occur in the body after death.
