R82: Other abnormal findings in urine

R82.3: Haemoglobinuria

There are normally 2 kidneys in the body. They filter blood and create urine. They thus help to detoxify the body. Furthermore, the kidneys regulate the blood pressure and salt content in the blood, among other things. Only certain substances are emitted via urine to detoxify the body. Haemoglobin is not normally excreted with the urine, or only in small amounts.

Blood is made up of a liquid part and different blood cells, among other things. The blood cells include the red blood cells, the white blood cells and the platelets. The red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs throughout the body. Red blood cells contain the red hemoglobin that gives blood its color. This pigment is important for carrying oxygen in the blood.

There are many different reasons for haemoglobin being in the urine. If a lot of haemoglobin is released in the blood, the haemoglobin is also one of things to be excreted with the urine. This can be the case, for example, when too many red blood cells are destroyed.

Haemoglobin being in the urine makes the urine turn brown.
