R82: Other abnormal findings in urine
R82.2: Biliuria
There are normally 2 kidneys in the body. They filter blood and create urine. They thus help to detoxify the body. Furthermore, the kidneys regulate the blood pressure and salt content in the blood, among other things. Only certain substances are emitted via urine to detoxify the body. Bile pigments are not normally excreted with the urine, or only in small amounts.
There are many different reasons for bile pigments being in the urine. When old blood cells are broken down, bile pigments come into being. These bilirubins are modified by a protein in the liver. Normally, the bile pigments are then released into the intestine through the bile ducts and then excreted. The bile pigments can get into the urine with liver or biliary tract disease, for example.
Bile pigments being in the urine makes the urine turn dark or foamy.
