R77: Other abnormalities of plasma proteins
R77.2: Abnormality of alphafetoprotein
Alpha fetoprotein is produced in the liver. So its level in the blood increases with certain liver disorders, for example. There is also a greater amount of this protein in the mother’s blood during pregnancy.
Changes in the amount of proteins in the blood are not always pathological. When assessing a changed value it is important to take into account possible problems and other test results.
