R73: Elevated blood glucose level
R73.9: Hyperglycaemia, unspecified
Hyperglycaemia, commonly referred to as high blood sugar, is a condition in which an excessive amount of glucose circulates in the blood plasma. This issue arises when your body has low levels of insulin or when it cannot use insulin effectively, a hormone that helps carry sugar from your blood into your cells where it's used for energy. Hyperglycemia usually does not cause symptoms until glucose values are significantly elevated. Symptoms of hyperglycemia develop slowly over several days or weeks. The longer blood sugar levels stay high, the more serious the symptoms become. These might include frequent urination, increased thirst, fatigue, blurred vision, headache, and in severe cases, unconsciousness. If left untreated, hyperglycemia can lead to a serious condition called ketoacidosis.
