R06: Abnormalities of breathing
R06.4: Hyperventilation
Hyperventilation, recognized by the ICD-10 code R06.4, is a condition where a person breathes at a faster rate than normal. Often triggered by stress, anxiety, or panic, it leads to a greater intake of oxygen and a lower level of carbon dioxide in the bloodstream than required. This imbalance of gases can result in symptoms like dizziness, light-headedness, a feeling of unsteadiness, tingling or numbness in the hands, feet, or lips, and rapid heartbeat. In severe cases, hyperventilation may lead to loss of consciousness. Hyperventilation can occur as a one-time event or as a recurring issue. While it's often closely linked with panic disorder, it can also result from certain medical conditions like lung diseases, heart conditions, or nervous system disorders.
