R00: Abnormalities of heart beat
R00.3: Pulseless electrical activity, not elsewhere classified
Pulseless electrical activity (PEA), as classified under the ICD-10 R00.3 code, is a life-threatening condition, which manifests when the heart's electrical rhythm appears normal, but the muscular contractions necessary to pump blood fail to occur or occur inadequately. This disconnection between electrical activity and mechanical function of the heart can result in a lack of a detectable pulse, critical blood flow, and ultimately, cardiac arrest if not promptly treated. PEA is often triggered by severe health issues including, but not limited to, hypoxia (lack of oxygen), acidosis (high levels of acid in the blood), hypovolemia (low blood volume), hypothermia, or trauma. Patients may experience an impending sense of doom, difficulty breathing, or lose consciousness due to the inadequate blood flow. Since the primary cause of PEA is often severe underlying health conditions, it generally requires immediate medical intervention.
