Q84: Other congenital malformations of integument

Q84.3: Anonychia

Anonychia refers to a rare congenital condition characterized by the partial or complete absence of fingernails or toenails. This condition can either be present at birth or develop shortly after and can affect one or more nails. The absence of nails occurs when the cells responsible for nail formation, known as the matrix, don't function correctly or lack entirely. This condition is typically a part of a more extensive syndrome and may be associated with other physical anomalies or developmental abnormalities. While Anonychia itself doesn't cause discomfort or pain, the absent nails can expose the sensitive skin beneath to potential injury. Furthermore, nails serve a significant role in finger sensitivity and dexterity; thus, their absence might mildly impact these functions. The occurrence, severity, and associated issues of Anonychia can vary greatly from one individual to another.
