Q28: Other congenital malformations of circulatory system
Q28.2: Arteriovenous malformation of cerebral vessels
Arteriovenous malformation of cerebral vessels is a rare, potentially serious condition that disrupts the normal blood flow and oxygen circulation within the brain. It is characterized by abnormal, snarled tangles of blood vessels which can lead to irregular connections between arteries and veins. Symptoms may vary greatly depending on the location and size of the malformation, and can include headaches, seizures, problems with movement or vision, and bleeding in the brain (hemorrhage). This condition is usually present from birth and the exact cause is presently unknown. Some individuals with this malformation may live their entire life without any symptoms or complications, while others can experience serious health problems. Arteriovenous malformations can progressively damage neurological functions over time, and sudden bleeding can cause severe brain injury or even be life-threatening.
