P91: Other disturbances of cerebral status of newborn
P91.1: Acquired periventricular cysts of newborn
The brain is located inside the head. It receives, processes and stores sensory impressions. The brain controls movements and various physical functions. There are cavities with cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, around the brain and around the spinal cord. Among other things, the cerebrospinal fluid cushions the brain and spinal cord during knocks and also nourishes the brain cells.
Cavities in a baby's brain tissue can form as a result of damage to the brain tissue. Damage of this type might be a cerebral hemorrhage, for example. If a blood vessel in the brain has been blocked by a blood clot, cavities may then also form in the child’s brain tissue. Cavities can also form as a result of certain pathogens and brain inflammations. The cavities often form in the area of the cavities filled with spinal fluid.
