P74.4: Other transitory electrolyte disturbances of newborn
There has to be a certain amount of minerals in the blood if the body is to be able to work normally. The mineral balance in the blood is affected by many organs. The kidneys play an important role in this. In the body there are also messengers that affect the mineral balance.
When there is a change in the mineral balance, there can be too many or too few of specific minerals present, for example. There can be a variety of reasons why the mineral balance in a baby's blood has changed. It may be caused by a kidney problem, for example. A vitamin D deficiency or metabolism disorders can also cause the mineral balance to change. Other reasons can be diarrhea or vomiting, for example.
