P29: Cardiovascular disorders originating in the perinatal period

P29.2: Neonatal hypertension

The heart pumps blood through the arteries to every part of the body. The pressure in the arteries must be enough for all the organs to get enough blood. On the other hand, if the blood pressure is too high, the heart, kidneys or other organs may get damaged. High blood pressure is when the blood pressure in the arteries is too high for a long period of time.

There are different reasons why a baby might have high blood pressure. In most cases, some other disorder or a defect is responsible for the high blood pressure. The kidneys or the blood vessels in the kidneys may be changed, for example. For example, if the blood vessels in the kidneys have narrowed, not enough blood will be able to get into the kidney tissue. When our kidneys receive too little blood, our blood pressure may increase. Another reason may be that the aorta has narrowed at a particular place in the body. The aorta begins at the heart and supplies the entire body with oxygen-rich blood.

Initially no external indications of high blood pressure in the baby might be noticed.
