P23: Congenital pneumonia

P23.3: Congenital pneumonia due to streptococcus, group B

The lungs are on the left and right side of the ribcage. They are also connected to the nose and mouth via the bronchial tubes and windpipe (trachea). The lung inflammation was caused by streptococci. Streptococci are bacteria. In a case of congenital lung inflammation, the child has been infected by the bacteria in the womb or during the birth.

A congenital lung inflammation may be accompanied by various health problems. These include a sucking weakness and breathlessness. The child’s breathing may also be faster than usual, or keep stopping for short periods. The body temperature may be higher or lower than usual.
