O90: Complications of the puerperium, not elsewhere classified
O90.5: Postpartum thyroiditis
The thyroid is a small organ at the bottom of the neck. The thyroid gland needs iodine to produce important messenger substances for the body. These messenger substances influence the heartbeat, digestion, and body temperature, among other things.
Your thyroid gland has become inflamed some time after the birth of your child. Your thyroid gland may be creating too many or too few messenger substances because of the inflammation.
If you have too many messenger substances from the thyroid gland in your body, you may be restless or have a rapid heartbeat, for example. You may also break out in a sweat often and lose weight. If you have too many messenger substances from the thyroid gland in your body, you may be slower or no longer think so well, for example. You may also have dry skin or constipation.
