O71: Other obstetric trauma

O71.4: Obstetric high vaginal laceration

The uterus or womb sits in the pelvis and is pear-shaped. The narrower part extends downward into the vagina and is called the cervix. When a woman is pregnant, the child grows in her uterus. The vagina is tubular and leads from the outside to the uterus.

When the child gets pushed through the vagina during labor, then the vagina can tear. The vagina can also be injured by certain aids used to assist the birth.

There may be bleeding from a tear in the upper part of the vagina.
