O69: Labour and delivery complicated by umbilical cord complications
O69.2: Labour and delivery complicated by other cord entanglement, with compression
During pregnancy the umbilical cord connects the child's blood circulation to the mother's. The child receives nutrients and oxygen via the blood vessels in the umbilical cord.
In the mother’s stomach the child turns in various positions. As a result, the umbilical cord can get wrapped around the child. The umbilical cord may also get tangled up or become knotted. When the umbilical cord gets wrapped around the child, it may get tightened during the birth. As a result, the child may no longer be supplied with sufficient oxygen. Your child’s umbilical cord got tangled up or knotted and it got compressed during the birth.
