O42: Premature rupture of membranes

O42.2: Premature rupture of membranes, labour delayed by therapy

Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) refers to a condition during pregnancy when the amniotic sac, or "water," breaks before labour begins. Specifically, when this occurs but labour is delayed due to treatment, it's referred to as O42.2. In normal pregnancy, the rupture of membranes signifies the onset of labour. However, when this happens prematurely, it presents risks to both the mother and the baby, including infections and premature birth. PROM is typically identified by a sudden gush or steady leakage of fluid from the vagina. It's crucial to avoid any possible infection vectors (for instance, abstaining from sexual intercourse and avoiding tampon use) and to receive appropriate prenatal care. It may be necessary for labour to be induced or for other interventions to prevent complications.
