O20-O29: Other maternal disorders predominantly related to pregnancy

O24: Diabetes mellitus in pregnancy

Diabetes mellitus in pregnancy refers to a group of conditions where high blood sugar levels occur for the first time or get worse during pregnancy. This group includes pre-existing Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes known before pregnancy, as well as gestational diabetes, which develops during pregnancy. Diabetes can lead to changes in how your body manages sugar and insulin, a hormone that helps move sugar from your blood into your cells. Common symptoms may include increased thirst, frequent urination, and fatigue. If left unmanaged, diabetes in pregnancy can cause fetal complications and affect the mother's health, potentially leading to premature birth, large baby size, or high blood pressure. Additionally, mothers with gestational diabetes are at increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life. The cause can be multifactorial, including genetic predisposition, obesity, and a history of diabetes in pregnancy.
