O08: Complications following abortion and ectopic and molar pregnancy
O08.5: Metabolic disorders following abortion and ectopic and molar pregnancy
This type of premature end to pregnancy may involve a miscarriage or a hydatidiform mole (molar pregnancy), for example. A hydatidiform mole is when a child fails to form a fertilized egg cell, and a benign tumor develops instead. It may also be a case of a pregnancy that failed to develop in the normal area inside the womb.
Various energy-acquisition processes occur in the body. The body acquires energy, for example, by breaking down nutrient elements or the body's own substances. Broken down nutrient elements are also used as building materials in the body. In this way, individual cells and tissue can be built or repaired. All of these processes together are known as metabolism.
With a metabolic disorder, there may be too few or too many of particular substances in the body. This can include minerals and messenger substances. A number of the body’s functions can then be disrupted. It is also possible that certain substances form incorrectly. When substances are incorrectly formed they do not carry out their function properly.
