O02: Other abnormal products of conception
O02.0: Blighted ovum and nonhydatidiform mole
A woman has two ovaries. Each ovary normally takes turns maturing one egg every month. These eggs may be fertilized by sperm. The eggs pass to the uterus through the fallopian tube. Normally, a fertilized egg cell develops into a child.
This development can be disturbed for various reasons. Then no child can develop. However, changes that happen at the beginning of a pregnancy can still occur. Placenta then develops inside the uterus. The placenta normally nourishes the child during pregnancy.
