N64: Other disorders of breast
N64.1: Fat necrosis of breast
The breast is made up of fatty tissue, connective tissue and the mammary gland. Milk is produced in the mammary gland during and after pregnancy so that the child can be fed.
Fatty tissue consists of a large number of fat cells. If the fatty tissue in the breast suffers severe damage, for example due to an inflammation, the fatty tissue can die. When this happens the fat cells are often replaced by calcium. This may mean areas of the breast become calcified. This may sometimes cause a palpable lump in the breast. Your breast may become painful. But you may also have no symptoms.
