N18.5: Chronic kidney disease, stage 5
Chronic kidney disease, stage 5, also known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD), represents the final, most severe stage of chronic kidney disease. In this state, the kidneys have lost nearly all their ability to do their job effectively. This means they're no longer able to filter waste, excess fluid, and harmful substances from your blood efficiently. Common signs and symptoms associated with this condition might include fatigue, decreased appetite, trouble sleeping, muscle cramps, and swelling of the feet and ankles. Without treatment, these waste products can build up to high levels in your blood, leading to complications like anemia, bone disease, heart disease, and high blood pressure. It's often the result of long-term health issues like diabetes and high blood pressure.
