M99: Biomechanical lesions, not elsewhere classified
M99.5: Intervertebral disc stenosis of neural canal
Intervertebral disc stenosis of the neural canal, often shortened to disc stenosis, is a specific type of back or spine condition. Your spine is made up of bones (vertebrae) that are cushioned by small, spongy discs. When these discs become damaged due to wear and tear, disease, or injury, they can shrink or become compressed — this is what 'stenosis' refers to. The narrowing happens in the neural canal, which is a hollow space within the spine that houses the spinal cord. This can cause pressure on your spinal cord or on the nerves that branch out from it. Common symptoms can include pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in your hands, arms, feet, or legs. These symptoms may start gradually and then worsen over time, potentially affecting your mobility or physical capability.
